It took 38 years, but I finally found the proper way to do my take on one of the most iconic rock (and slightly "synthy") rock songs of all time. How could I ever improve on something that's already perfect? I hope I have at least been able to add a little extra beef here and there, basing it on Rick Beato's detailed insight on "What makes this song great" episode where he dissected Jump by Van Halen a couple of years ago.
Using those snippets he provided as well as what I believe is a recording from one of the singles back in the 80s with the a cappella vocals from the original, I set out to reconstruct my own take on this song, with some beefy synth bass, drums and keys to boot. The hardest task was to time-align the original song with the isolated vocals which also drifted from each other (I'm assuming tape/turntable drift somewhere in the loop back then) and then trying to mesh that with my more four on the floor grid approach (Sorry, Rick! ;)). I did end up doing a slight tempo variation throughout the song though to match the feel of the original session we all know and love.
I used a lot of layers to fatten things up, so there's a lot of Yamaha electric bass from Motif-Rack, Parker from reFX Nexus4, four layers of synth brass from Oberheim Matrix1000 (I don't own an OB-Xa/OB-8), Yamaha XS7, Ensoniq SD-1 and Roland JD-800. I've used some synth guitars and other sounds for the background guitar parts, but ended up using the original guitar solo from Eddie - it was impossible for me to translate it into something useable on my synths.
Hopefully I've managed to show this song some honor.
lyrics
I get up and nothin' gets me down
You got it tough, I've seen the toughest around
And I know, baby, just how you feel
You got to roll with the punches and get to what's real
Ah, can't you see me standin' here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen
Ah, can't you see what I mean?
Ah, might as well jump (jump)
Might as well jump
Go ahead and jump (jump)
Go ahead and jump
Ow, oh, hey, you
Who said that?
Baby, how you been?
You say you don't know
You won't know until you begin
So can't ya see me standing here
I got my back against the record machine
I ain't the worst that you've seen
Ah, can't you see what I mean?
Ah, might as well jump (jump)
Go ahead and jump
Might as well jump (jump)
Go ahead and jump
Jump
Might as well jump (jump)
Go ahead and jump
Get it in, jump (jump)
Go ahead and jump
Jump
Jump
Jump
Jump

This soundtrack has pretty much made my entire childhood so I'm excited to hear the vinyl of it! Praying that one day we can hear the third album but no pressure, since everything surrounding it must've been super stressful to deal with. Always looking forward to hear your next work! imande
